16/05: Bio Diesel

I am experimenting with bio-diesel fuel for my diesel powered automobile. I was surprised to buy it at the same price that regular, low-sulphur diesel sells for. So far mileage is the same at about 37mpg combined city/highway. Granted it is only B20 (20% bio mixed with 80% tradional diesel) but that means a reduction in greenhouse gasses of something like 15%. It is a start. We await B100.

Like socially responsible investing there is no penalty for being green. Kermit notwithstanding!

The American Dream is seductive and the market is buying into it. This is part of what is going on. Another part is that there is momentum based on the hope that the future will not be visited by insurmountable obstacles. It feels very much like the transition into the new technology era. The market has been champing at the bit and is now galloping. The question is whether or not we can, or even should, stay on the horse, or, from another perspective, which horse will stay on course.

There are always undervalued companies and overvalued ones despite the idea that the tide lifts all boats or brings them all down together. My focus is long term valuation. The questions I ask of companies will be valid in all phases of the market: Is their product, service, or software solution sustainable and beneficial? Is the company a leader/changemaker? Is it undervalued? Is it creative, innovative, flexible, transparent and collaborative? If the answer is yes, even in this market, it is a Buy!
